An important diplomatic meeting took place in Minsk, where John Cole, the US President’s Special Envoy for Belarus, held talks with Alexander Lukashenko. The meeting, which attracted the attention of the international community, was aimed at discussing the fate of Belarusian political prisoners.
Alexander Lukashenko, in welcoming the American diplomat, emphasised that Belarus has nothing to hide and is keen on open dialogue. Key figures from the Belarusian government joined the meeting, including Prime Minister Alexander Turchin and KGB Chairman Ivan Tertel. Also present on the US side was State Department representative Christopher Panico, which added significance to the talks.
One of the key points of the meeting was the discussion regarding the unfreezing of funds held at Citibank. These funds belong to ‘Belaruskali’ – a major Belarusian company. John Cole indicated that the US side was already taking steps in this direction, which could prove to be an important step towards improving economic relations between the two countries.
Earlier, in an interview, Cole spoke about his mission to Belarus, emphasising the release of political prisoners. He reported that several hundred people had already been released and expressed the hope that this figure would reach a thousand. However, as Radio Free Europe’s Belarusian service points out, by no means all of those released are political prisoners.
The process of releasing political prisoners in Belarus began several years ago as a result of negotiations between the Donald Trump administration and Minsk. Although some prisoners were released by decree of Lukashenko ahead of public holidays, unfortunately, the country continues to see a new wave of politically motivated arrests.
Talks between John Cole and the Belarusian authorities could prove to be an important step towards resolving this complex humanitarian issue. Meanwhile, the international community is closely monitoring developments, hoping for a brighter future for Belarus.
