US President Donald Trump will attend the Group of Seven leaders’ summit in Canada next month, the White House said, despite tensions over his calls for the neighbouring country to become the 51st US state.
“President Trump will travel to the G7 Leaders Summit in Canada from 15 to 17 June,” White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt told reporters at a briefing.
Relations between Washington and Ottawa have been strained over Trump’s repeated statements that Canada should become the 51st US state, his imposition of duties on Canadian imports.
