Ukraine cuts manganese ore sales, main supplies go to Slovakia

Ukraine’s exports of manganese ore in January-October this year decreased by 30.8 per cent year-on-year to 13.732,000 tonnes, but in August-October it stepped up shipments.

According to statistics released by the State Customs Service (SCS), while shipments for the first seven months of 2025 were at 2,977,000 tonnes, exports more than doubled in August, when 5,037,000 tonnes were exported, to 1,725,000 tonnes in September and 3,993,000 tonnes in October.

In monetary terms, exports in the first ten months of 2025 fell by 17.4 per cent compared to the same period in 2024, to $2.214 million, with the main exports going to Slovakia (98.74 per cent of shipments in monetary terms) and Poland (1.26 per cent).

There were no imports of manganese ore during this period.

As reported, Ukraine exported 44.903 thousand tonnes of manganese ore worth $6.563 million to the US once in January 2024, breaking a two-year absence of shipments to foreign markets. There were no manganese ore exports in February-December 2024.

However, for the full year 2024, the country imported 84,293 thousand tonnes worth $18.302 million from Ghana (98.85%), Brazil (0.99%) and Belgium (0.11%). There were no imports in October-November.

Ukraine did not export manganese ore in 2022 and 2023, in 2021 exported 770 tonnes for $89 thousand.

In addition, it was reported that Pokrovsky Mining and Processing Plant (PGOK, formerly Ordzhonikidze Mining and Processing Plant) and Manganese Mining and Processing Plant (MGOK, both in Dnipropetrovsk region), part of Privat Group, stopped mining and processing of crude manganese ore in late October-early November 2023, while NVF and ZZF stopped smelting of ferroalloys. In summer 2024, the ferroalloy smelters resumed production at minimal levels.

PGOK and MGOK did not produce in 2024, while in 2023 PGOK produced 160.31 thousand tonnes of manganese concentrate and MGOK was idle.

In Ukraine, the Pokrovsky and Marganetsky mining and processing plants mine and concentrate manganese ore.

Consumers of manganese ore are ferroalloy enterprises.
