US ambassador to Russia leaves Moscow

US Ambassador to Russia Lynne Tracy is leaving Moscow, the US embassy said on social media on 27 June.

“Her work has been distinguished by her openness, honesty and conviction that even in difficult times meaningful dialogue is important. As Ambassador Tracy said:” I am proud to have represented my country in Moscow during such a challenging time,” the embassy noted.

Earlier this month, the embassy announced that Tracy would soon end her mission in Russia, but did not give an exact date.

Lynn Tracy has served in U.S. diplomatic missions in Russia, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan.

She served as ambassador to Russia in 2023, becoming the first woman to serve as United States ambassador to Moscow. She has previously served twice at the U.S. Embassy in Russia, first in the late 1980s during perestroika and then from 2014-2017, when she was Deputy Ambassador John Tefft. She also served as Senior Advisor for Russian Affairs in the State Department’s Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs.
