A scandal has erupted in the world of high technology that could affect relations between several major powers at once. The American company Oxygen Forensics, known for its software solutions in the field of digital forensics, has found itself at the centre of an international investigation. According to the US authorities, a Russian firm linked to Russia’s Federal Security Service is behind its activities.
At the centre of the events is 55-year-old Lee Raiber, the company’s chief executive, who lives in the state of Idaho. He was arrested on charges of telecommunications fraud but was soon released on bail. Meanwhile, the alleged owner of the firm – 52-year-old Oleg Davydov from Moscow – was detained in London. The US intends to seek his extradition.
The company’s history began with the opening of a branch in a Washington suburb in 2013. Oxygen Forensics assured its clients and the US government that its software was developed on US soil without any foreign influence. However, according to prosecutors, the company is owned by Davydov and four other unnamed Russians with links to the FSB.
Interestingly, following the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine in 2022, the US and its allies tightened controls on foreign-owned businesses. According to the investigation, Davydov and his partners did everything possible to conceal their involvement with Oxygen Forensics. The company was renamed MKO Systems in Russia and continued to sell its products to domestic law enforcement agencies.
One of the company’s key products, Mobile Forensic Detective, is used to extract data and is frequently employed by Russian security services. In the US, similar programmes are actively used in investigations — for example, the National Institute of Computer Forensics, part of the Secret Service, has a five-year contract with Oxygen Forensics.
Whilst the charges against Raiber and Davydov relate to fraud, it is unclear whether the software contains malicious elements or whether it was used to gain unauthorised access. Given the global rise in cyberattacks, this case is a cause for particular concern. This is especially true in light of the FBI’s recent announcement regarding a cyberattack on its systems, in which information on thousands of agents was leaked.
The cybersecurity community is holding its breath as it awaits further developments. This incident has once again highlighted just how fragile the line between security and threat can be in the digital age.
