In the US state of Minnesota, a member of the state House of Representatives, Melissa Gortman, and her husband were shot dead by an unidentified gunman on 14 June. Another legislator – a member of the state Senate John Hoffman – was wounded. This was reported by local police, a report also confirmed by state Governor Tim Walz.
The governor called the killings politically motivated. The person killed, Melissa Gortman, represented the Democratic Party. She is a well-known politician in the state who was the Speaker of the House of Representatives until January this year.
The shooting took place in a suburb of Minneapolis. The shooter was reportedly wearing a police uniform. He escaped and is now at large, police are searching for him.
There is no data on the identity of the suspect yet, but police say that in the car he owns, they found a text with a list of politicians to whom he threatened to kill.
US President Donald Trump called the incident a “horrific act of violence”, saying the killing was apparently politically motivated. Justice Secretary Pam Bondi made the same assessment.
