Zelenskyy: ‘Replacing Starlink is not under discussion’

Against the backdrop of complex geopolitical realities, Ukraine is actively seeking ways to expand its capabilities in the field of satellite communications. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced this on 16 October during the EU summit in Brussels, whilst answering questions from journalists. Although the country currently has no intention of abandoning Starlink’s services, Ukraine is taking steps to strengthen its own technologies by cooperating with European partners.

The initiative to reduce dependence on externally supplied technologies, particularly American systems, has become one of Kyiv’s top priorities. Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine is currently working actively with France and other European countries to create additional capabilities that will strengthen national security and improve access to intelligence.

Starlink, a SpaceX project providing satellite internet, has become an important tool for Ukraine in the face of current challenges. However, the hope of developing similar domestic capabilities demonstrates the country’s aspiration for technological self-reliance. This may also imply expanded cooperation with European countries in the fields of high technology and defence.

Ukraine’s ability to meet its own needs in strategic areas such as communications and intelligence is becoming increasingly important, particularly in light of the current international situation. By developing its own capabilities, Ukraine hopes to strengthen its independence and resilience in the face of various challenges.
