A medical aircraft has gone missing in the US

A dramatic incident has unfolded in the skies above the east coast of the US, keeping the emergency services on tenterhooks for several hours now. At around 1 am local time, a medical aircraft flying from the Bermuda Islands to Boston disappeared from radar. There were six people on board, including two passengers and four crew members.

The aircraft, a Gulfstream G-100, belongs to the Canadian company Latitude Air Ambulance, known for its ‘air ambulance’ flights. These flights often involve the evacuation of patients or their return home following complex medical treatment. The circumstances surrounding the plane’s disappearance remain a mystery: contact with it was lost after a sudden drop in altitude — from 24,000 to 11,000 feet.

Immediately after the disappearance, US Coast Guard personnel launched a large-scale search and rescue operation. HC-144 Ocean Sentry and HC-130 Hercules aircraft, as well as an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter, were deployed. Rescue vessels were dispatched to comb the vast expanse of the Atlantic in the area where the aircraft was believed to have gone missing.

Latitude Air Ambulance confirmed that there were two pilots, an intensive care doctor and a nurse on board – the standard crew complement for such flights. Occasionally, an additional general practitioner is also sent on such flights, which underlines the importance and complexity of the medical tasks carried out by the company.

Whilst the search continues, hope for a positive outcome remains. However, with every passing minute, the situation becomes increasingly worrying, and many are pinning their hopes on the professionalism of the rescue teams, who are continuing their work in difficult weather conditions.
