Romania’s Central Election Commission (CEC) has rejected the presidential candidacy of far-right pro-Russian politician Kelin Georgescu, prompting clashes between his supporters and police in Bucharest.
Now there are about 1500 protesters on the streets of Bucharest, they throw paving stones and firecrackers towards the police, and law enforcers use gas in response. the protest continues near the Central Election Commission.
The police ask citizens to leave the area of the protests if possible, to stay in safe places.
Earlier it became known that Romania banned the leader of far-right forces Kelin Georgescu to participate in the May presidential elections.
The Central Election Commission of Romania in Bucharest recognised the candidacy of Georgescu invalid. The agency is known to have received more than a thousand complaints against the politician because of his “anti-democratic and extremist stance”. The decision can still be appealed to the Constitutional Court. At the same meeting, the candidacy of Nicus Dan was approved.
It is stated that the Romanian CEC rejected Georgescu’s candidacy allegedly because of problems with documents – “he submitted an unsigned application explaining the difference in income in his declaration”.
Georgescu reacted to the Romanian CEC’s decision and called it “a direct blow to the heart”.
“A direct blow to the heart of world democracy!”I have another message! If democracy in Romania collapses, the whole democratic world will collapse! This is just the beginning. It’s that simple!” the politician wrote on social network x.
“Europe is now a dictatorship, Romania is under tyranny!”,- declared Georgescu.
