An affordable alternative to the Maldives: why Zanzibar is the winter holiday of choice for tourists

The Maldives has long been considered one of the best holiday destinations, but long flights and high costs make the trip unattainable for many. Zanzibar, a tropical island off the coast of Tanzania, offers equally beautiful scenery, but at a much cheaper price. Shorter flights and more affordable resorts attract tourists from all over the world.

According to the international publication Express, Zanzibar is called the new “beach magnet”. Turquoise waters, calm bays, developed infrastructure and rich cultural heritage are waiting for you here. British travel companies even call the island one of the best alternatives to the Maldives.

Zanzibar is part of Tanzania and was recently ranked as one of the world’s best islands in the Conde Nast Traveller Readers Choice Awards 2025, with a score of 91.43 out of 100. That’s the fourth position among islands in Africa and the Indian Ocean – and a good reason to pay attention to it.

Why tourists choose Zanzibar

The island is valued for its authenticity, tranquillity and exotic nature. Here you can also dip your feet in the warm sand and savour coconut, but without the Maldivian price tags. The beaches of Zanzibar are called one of the best in the world, and their accessibility makes the holiday even more pleasant.

Experts emphasise: the main advantage is diversity.

* North of the island (Nungwi, Kendwa) – lively and active: beach bars, entertainment, clean water.

* The south-east (Paje, Jambiani) is a paradise for lovers of tranquillity: deserted beaches, kitesurfing, walking and watching the sunrise.

So you don’t have to choose between entertainment and relaxation – it has it all.

A wealth of history and nature

Apart from the beaches, Zanzibar is famous for its unique history. Its capital, Stone Town, is a UNESCO heritage site. Tourists are enchanted by the carved wooden doors, narrow streets and the aromas of spices that literally hang in the air.

In the centre of the island is the Jozani Forest, the only place on the planet where the red colobus monkey, a rare species found nowhere else, lives. And for the outdoor enthusiast, there is snorkelling near Mnemba Atoll, dolphin watching and excursions to spice plantations.
