Australia bans Russian ships from entering ports for the first time due to sanctions

Australia has imposed sanctions against 60 ships, which, according to the authorities, are part of the so-called shadow fleet of Russia. This was announced by the country’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong.

“Russia uses these vessels to circumvent international sanctions and continue exporting oil and other sub-sanctioned goods,” the foreign minister said.

Under the measures released, authorities are authorised to require such vessels to leave Australia’s territorial waters, take a proposed route or not call at specific ports. This is the first case in the country’s history when a ban is imposed on ships entering Australian harbours on sanctions grounds.

Wong recalled that Australia has already imposed more than 1,400 sanctions against Russian citizens and companies and will continue to resort to “strong measures in support of Ukraine”.
