Slovakia detains eight people in case of misuse of funds for military aid to Ukraine

Slovakia has detained eight people, including four officials of the Defence Ministry, as part of an investigation into the suspected misuse of funds earmarked for military aid to Ukraine. This was reported on 18 June by the website of the European Prosecutor’s Office, which estimates the probable losses at 7.4 million euros.

The European Prosecutor’s Office initiated the investigation in April 2025.

Between February and March 2022, high-ranking officials of the Slovak Ministry of Defence applied for reimbursement to the European Peace Fund for military aid provided to Ukraine, namely the supply of ammunition donated to the country, the press release said.

“It is alleged that the suspects deliberately violated their obligations as well as the budgetary rules of the public administration by giving unjustified orders for the purchase of ammunition from two private companies. The European Prosecutor’s Office suspects that the public procurement procedure was falsified and that the ammunition may have been overpriced,” the statement said.

The investigation is being conducted in cooperation with the police department for combating organised crime in Slovakia.

The European Public Prosecutor’s Office is an independent EU prosecutor’s office responsible for investigating, prosecuting and adjudicating offences against the Union’s financial interests.
