Flights operated by Iranian airlines have been suspended in Azerbaijan since 22 September. This decision is linked to new sanctions imposed by the United States against Iran, which primarily affect the aviation sector. The news was reported by local media, citing the national carrier, Azerbaijani Airlines.
The sanctions in question were brought into force in an attempt to put pressure on the Islamic Republic of Iran and restrict its international transport capabilities. The US Treasury Department, headed by Scott Bessent, announced these measures on 21 September, emphasising that they are aimed at completely halting the operations of all Iranian airlines worldwide from 23 September.
However, despite such high-profile statements, Iran’s national airline, Iran Air, stated that it had not received any official notifications the previous day from neighbouring countries, such as Turkey, Azerbaijan and Iraq, regarding a flight ban. This has caused some confusion, as such measures are usually co-ordinated in advance with neighbouring states.
The situation surrounding the new sanctions and their impact on air travel between countries remains tense. Whilst the US is stepping up pressure on Iran, regional players are forced to adapt to the changes and make strategic decisions in line with the new circumstances of international politics.
