Azerbaijan still maintains land border closures imposed during the pandemic

Special quarantine regime has been prolonged on the territory of Azerbaijan, this time until 1 January 2026. The relevant decree was signed by the country’s Prime Minister Ali Asadov, Trend reports.

The opening of Azerbaijan’s land borders, which were closed since spring 2020, has been postponed again. Baku said it would maintain the quarantine regime imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic “for as long as necessary.” President Ilham Aliyev claimed that closing the borders saved the country from very large disasters.

Entry to Azerbaijan is possible only by air. At the same time, foreigners and stateless persons can leave the country by land. The border is also open for cargo transport.

Earlier it was reported that railway communication between Georgia and Azerbaijan could be restored, but this information was not confirmed. The need to open land borders has been repeatedly stated by ethnic Azerbaijanis living in Georgia.

On 5 May 2023, the World Health Organisation announced the lifting of the global health emergency related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
