EU High Representative for Security and Foreign Policy Kai Kallas was asked whether US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had assured her that Washington would not make concessions that are against Ukraine’s interests and red lines. The answer was yes.
“It was pointed out that nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine, and of course Ukraine and Europe have to agree on what is being discussed because all of this is happening in Europe. So yes, he has given us assurances about that,” Kaja Kallas said as she arrived at the NATO foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels on 4 April.
The statement came against the backdrop of Washington’s contacts with Moscow, in particular the 2-3 April visit of Putin’s representative Kirill Dmitriev to Washington.
NATO defence ministers have gathered for a two-day meeting in Brussels on 3-4 April, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio attending for the first time. One of the NATO sessions is devoted to the situation in Ukraine (with the participation of only NATO ministers), and on the margins of the meeting there is a Ukraine-NATO council with the participation of a Ukrainian minister.
