Canada will hold parliamentary elections on 28 April to elect a new prime minister and form a national government. Polling stations will be open for 12 hours, although opening and closing times vary from province to province.
The main contenders are the Liberal Party, led by Mark Carney after Justin Trudeau resigned as prime minister, and the Conservative Party, chaired by Pierre Polievre. New Democratic Party, the Green Party and the Bloc Québécois, which represents the country’s French-speaking province.
At the beginning of the campaign, the Conservative Party was considered the favourite, but the replacement of Trudeau by Carney, who is now prime minister, has returned voters’ commitment to the Liberals.
Canada’s election campaign was influenced by the trade war with the United States, as well as US President Donald Trump’s statements about annexing Canada as the “51st state”.
Final election results could be announced as early as the night of 29 April.
