Passenger car production in the UK fell by 10.6 per cent in July compared with the same month last year, to 61,767 thousand, according to a press release from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
This marks the second consecutive month of decline, following a 1.3 per cent fall in June.
Production of cars for the domestic market rose by 9.3 per cent to 15,534 thousand. Meanwhile, production for export fell by 15.8 per cent to 46,233 thousand. Consequently, around 74 per cent of passenger cars produced in Britain were supplied to overseas markets.
Exports to European Union countries fell by 15.2 per cent, to the US by 17.7 per cent, to Turkey by 18.5 per cent, to Japan by 24.4 per cent and to China by 36.9 per cent.
Domestic production of passenger cars in January–July fell by 4.7 per cent compared with the same period in 2025, totalling 433,523 thousand.
Total vehicle production (passenger cars and commercial vehicles) fell by 11.6 per cent last month to 63,655 thousand units, and by 8.1 per cent over the first seven months of this year to 449,634 thousand.
