Corning introduced Gorilla Glass Ceramic with ceramic impurities

Corning Incorporated has unveiled a durable transparent glass-ceramic material called Gorilla Glass Ceramic, which the company says will improve the durability of mobile devices. Gorilla Glass Ceramic is reportedly more resistant to drops on hard surfaces compared to competing manufacturers’ aluminosilicate glass.

When tested in laboratory conditions plates of Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic withstood 10 falls from a height of one metre on a surface imitating the hardness and texture of asphalt, while aluminosilicate glass gave cracks at the first fall.

The new material will add to Corning Gorilla Glass’ portfolio of durable protective materials for OEMs. The company said that a new Motorola device with a Gorilla Glass Ceramic coating should be expected in the coming months.

“Gorilla Glass has earned a reputation for strong and resilient [glass], and our new glass-ceramic material continues that tradition,” said David Velasquez, vice president and general manager of Corning Gorilla Glass.

He noted that designed to provide enhanced durability, Gorilla Glass Ceramic reaffirms the company’s commitment to innovation and the development of high-quality, durable materials for case covers and displays. The new glass is positioned as the ideal protective coating for smartphone and wearable device displays, as well as camera lenses.
