A mysterious incident is unfolding in Germany following the discovery of drone wreckage near Hanover. On 14 September, the police received an alarming report: fragments of a drone had been found near the picturesque Lake Steinhuder, right in the heart of Lower Saxony. At first glance, this might seem like a coincidence, but the site is just one kilometre from the important military airbase at Wunstorf. It is here that Germany’s Airbus A400M military transport aircraft are based, which play a key role in ensuring national security.
It remains unclear who owned the drone and how it came to be so close to this strategic site. The police are continuing their search for the remaining parts of the drone and are trying to establish its origin. The investigation is in its early stages, and none of the theories has yet been confirmed.
This situation is unfolding against a backdrop of recent political tensions between Germany and Russia. On 1 September, the German authorities accused Russia of attempting an attack on Leipzig Airport. Two individuals, holding Russian, Latvian and Belarusian citizenship, have come under suspicion. These allegations provoked a strong reaction in Moscow. Russian Presidential Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov described Germany’s actions as a step towards escalating the conflict, whilst Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov declared that a ‘real war’ had begun.
In response to the accusations, Germany decided to close the ‘Russian House’ in Berlin and the last remaining Russian Consulate-General in Bonn. Moscow did not remain in debt and withdrew its consent for the activities of the German Consulate-General in St Petersburg. Against this backdrop, the incident involving the drone wreckage takes on particular urgency and significance.
