DeepSeek, a Chinese artificial intelligence start-up, plans to double its workforce to strengthen its position in the competition with the American companies OpenAI and Anthropic in the field of advanced artificial intelligence, reports The Wall Street Journal.
“Humanity is experiencing the dawn of the era of powerful AI,” reads a statement from DeepSeek published yesterday on the social media platform WeChat. “Against the backdrop of this technology’s development, we aim to at least double the size of all our departments.”
The company has announced a recruitment drive for software engineers, data scientists, machine learning specialists, product managers and HR professionals, as well as staff for its finance and legal departments, and other roles.
Strong AI (also known as Artificial General Intelligence, AGI) refers to developments aimed at creating artificial intelligence comparable to human intelligence, capable of self-learning and solving an unlimited range of tasks. This distinguishes it from existing models of narrow or weak AI, which are designed to perform specific functions within predefined parameters.
The start-up raised over 50 billion yuan ($7.4 billion) in its first investment round, held earlier in June, and was valued at over $50 billion.
DeepSeek gained widespread popularity in early 2025 when it released an AI model whose performance is on a par with that of its American competitors, despite China’s limited access to cutting-edge technology and international specialists.
According to various sources, the company employs around 200 people.
