US President Donald Trump has stated that Iran launched at least four drones at ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
“One of the drones crashed into the upper deck of a large and very expensive cargo ship. Damage was caused, but the ship was able to continue on its way. We shot down three more drones,” he wrote on the social media platform Truth Social.
Trump described the incident as a “senseless violation” of the ceasefire agreement.
The Iranian side has not yet commented on the matter.
Earlier that same day, the Taiwanese shipping operator Evergreen Marine stated that one of its container ships had collided with an “unknown object” whilst transiting a strategic waterway on 25 June, but that the crew, the vessel and the cargo were “unharmed”.
It is unclear whether Trump’s comments were related to this incident.
On 26 June, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned that safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz could not be guaranteed without coordination with Tehran.
Freedom of navigation through the Strait has become one of the central issues in efforts to secure an agreement between the United States and Iran after Tehran effectively closed the waterway following US-Israeli air strikes earlier this year.
