Don’t risk it: a pilot with 22 years’ experience tells where he wouldn’t fly for all the world’s money

People have long been attracted to all things mysterious. At the same time, there are places to watch out for. Pilot Richard Wells named the steepest route for himself. He emphasised: various cataclysms are not so frightening, but there is a place that does not provide a “plan B”.

Where Richard is afraid to fly

Richard emphasised: he has experienced almost every type of flight in his career. He has flown through storms, travelled routes over mountains and been to remote islands.

In general Richard has been a pilot on international flights covering Europe, Asia and the Americas. At the same time, Antarctica continues to terrify him. There is no backup there, no rules apply, in general such flights are not worth the risk.

There’s no margin for error. The infrastructure is minimal, and even experienced crews have limited options if conditions deteriorate during the flight. It’s not something I would ever risk,” Richard added.

There are no commercial flights to Antarctica at all. Even very experienced pilots prefer to stay as far away from it as possible.

At the same time, highly specialised charter flights do operate. Besides, military or scientific missions are flown to Antarctica. However, each time such a flight is a dangerous lottery.
