Reports from Iran indicate that in July, the cost of electricity for domestic consumers in Iran rose three to four times compared with the previous month.
According to Iranian media, a family that received a bill for around 300,000 tomans in June was faced with a bill for 800,000 tomans in July.
Mustafa Rajabi-Mashadi, a spokesperson for Iran’s electricity sector, responded that “there was no sudden increase in tariffs, and the high bills are mainly due to customers exceeding their consumption patterns”.
According to Rajabi-Mashadi, the ‘consumption model’ is determined based on the consumption of 75 per cent of customers in each region, whilst customers who consume less than this model receive subsidies and rewards for efficient consumption.
The rise in electricity prices comes at a time when temperatures in many parts of Iran are extremely high. Iranian citizens are also facing a sharp rise in the prices of essential goods and services due to the consequences of the war and rising inflation.
