Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that he will hold a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump on 5 January. According to him, the main topics will be peace efforts to end Russia’s war against Ukraine, as well as the situation in the Gaza Strip.
Erdogan said this while addressing journalists in Istanbul on 2 January. He also noted that Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan would attend a meeting of the “coalition of the willing” (countries supporting Ukraine) scheduled for 6 January in Paris.
Erdogan had a telephone conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in November. “President Erdogan stated that Turkey will continue its efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war with a just and sustainable peace,” the Turkish president’s office said at the time.
Erdogan also reiterated Ankara’s readiness to join all diplomatic initiatives and plans that can contribute to direct negotiations between the parties and the restoration of peace in the region.
On 29 December, US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held talks in Florida (USA). The presidents then held a telephone conversation with several European leaders.
Subsequently, the President of Ukraine said that at the talks in the United States discussed all aspects of the peace framework and achieved “significant results”. They also discussed the sequence of further actions. According to him, the US and Ukrainian teams will meet as early as next week to finalise all the discussed issues on security guarantees.
French President Emmanuel Macron, who participated in the conversation with Zelensky and Trump, said progress was being made on security guarantees, which will be “key to building a just and lasting peace.” Macron also announced in early January a meeting of representatives of the countries’ representatives of the ” coalition of the willing in Paris to finalise the specific contribution of each country.
