Magnitude 6.5 earthquake hits Mexico, president evacuated during press conference

A magnitude 6.5 earthquake jolted southern Mexico on 2 January, forcing people into the streets but causing no major damage, according to preliminary reports.

The seismological service said the epicentre of the quake was 14km southwest of San Marcos, in the southern state of Guerrero, about 400km from Mexico City.

President Claudia Sheinbaum’s press conference was briefly interrupted due to the tremors. She was forced to evacuate the presidential palace with the journalists present when the earthquake warning was sounded.

The press conference was later resumed and Sheinbaum said there were no reports of major damage so far in either Mexico City or Guerrero.

Mexico is one of the most seismically active countries in the world.
