EU lifts sanctions on Syria

The EU has decided to lift sanctions on Syria, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said online on 20 May x.

“over the past 14 years, the EU has always supported Syrians – and will continue to do so,” Kallas said.

AFP news agency reported, citing unnamed diplomats, that EU countries had given the green light to lift all economic sanctions on Syria. The move should help the country recover from the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

United States President Donald Trump announced on 13 May that he plans to lift sanctions on Syria after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

Bashar al-Assad’s regime was toppled in December 2024. The former Syrian president fled to Russia, where he was granted asylum. After the overthrow of Assad, Ahmad al-Sharaa became the president of the transitional period in Syria.
