The European Union may lift sanctions on Syria following today’s Foreign Affairs Council meeting, the bloc’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on 20 May.
“On Syria – I hope we will agree on the lifting of economic sanctions today,” she said, speaking to reporters about the meeting’s agenda.
At the same time, AFP news agency reported, citing unnamed diplomats, that EU countries had given the green light to lift all economic sanctions on Syria. The move should help the country recover from the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
Earlier, United States President Donald Trump announced that he plans to lift sanctions on Syria after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
Bashar al-Assad’s regime was toppled in December 2024. The former Syrian president fled to Russia, where he was granted asylum. After the overthrow of Assad, Ahmad al-Sharaa became the president of the transitional period in Syria.
