Explosions rocked Riyadh on the day the airport was due to open

On 25 October, explosions rocked the Saudi Arabian capital, Riyadh. On that day, the kingdom was due to reopen its international airport, which had been attacked on numerous occasions by the Yemeni Houthis.

Saudi Arabia leads a military coalition opposing the Iran-backed Houthis. In recent weeks, the kingdom has been targeted on several occasions by this group.

Hostilities resumed following the breakdown of a long-standing ceasefire between the Houthis and the Riyadh-backed Yemeni government. The conflict has also shifted the focus of the wider confrontation between the US and Iran.

Earlier, Riyadh International Airport announced that flights would resume on Sunday, 25 October, following a two-week hiatus caused by Houthi attacks. However, it remains unclear to what extent the airport is ready to operate at full capacity.

The Houthis have attacked the airport on multiple occasions. During one of the strikes this month, 13 people were killed and more than 300 were injured. This was the deadliest incident in the kingdom in over 10 years.
