Finnish president calls for appointment of special envoy on Ukraine issues

Finnish President Alexander Stubb has called for the appointment of a special envoy for Ukraine. He made the corresponding statement in an interview with France 24.

According to Stubb, the EU needs two things. The first is a negotiating team, as in the US, Ukraine and the Russian Federation.

“We probably need a special envoy to be in charge and coordinate everything, because right now, although we have really good leadership from France and the UK, there is still the question, “OK, who is the European envoy? Who should I call?”,” he emphasised.

Stubb emphasised that Ukraine must win the war and preserve its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“The French, and the British have taken the initiative. And the rest of us are watching and participating,” he emphasised.

Stubb also named the conditions for the deployment of military “coalition of the willing” on the territory of Ukraine.

“The first stage-is a ceasefire. The second stage-is an actual peace agreement. Consequently, the ceasefire requires some guarantee. That means you can help in the air, at sea, possibly on land. That’s the type of planning that our military personnel are doing right now. And the political decisions that we’re making here in Paris are part of that first phase. The second phase is when peace is maintained, when you bring in troops to deal with crisis situations or peacekeeping troops based on an international mandate,” Stubb emphasised.

On 23-25 March, US representatives held bilateral talks at the technical level with the Ukrainian delegation in Riyadh.

On 25 March, the White House said that with Ukraine in Saudi Arabia, among other things, they agreed on safe navigation in the Black Sea and to develop a mechanism to ban strikes on energy facilities.

Also in Riyadh on 24 March, the US delegation held talks with Russian representatives, they lasted more than 12 hours.

US President Donald Trump, commenting on the talks in Saudi Arabia, said about “great progress”.
