A man suspected of attacking with knives and injuring five people in the centre of Amsterdam on 27 March turned out to be a 30-year-old Ukrainian citizen from Donetsk Region, local police said.
The attacker was arrested after the incident and was wounded in the leg. Part of Dam Square was blocked for some time. Because of the attack stopped the meetings of the city council of Amsterdam.
The man, who, according to police, had checked into a hotel in Amsterdam, will appear in court on 1 April, which will decide on his further detention.
The attacker’s motives are unknown at this time and the investigation is ongoing.
It is known that the attack injured a 26-year-old man from Poland, a 73-year-old Belgian woman, a 19-year-old woman from Amsterdam, as well as two U.S. citizens-67-year-old woman and 69-year-old man.
The Polish citizen has already been discharged from hospital on 28 March, however, the other victims are still under medical supervision, their condition is stable, police said.
Earlier it became known that five people were injured in a knife attack near the central Dam Square in Amsterdam on 27 March.
