Former German foreign minister Berbock elected president of the UN General Assembly

Annalena Berbock, former head of the German Foreign Ministry, has been elected president of the UN General Assembly – she became the fifth woman in this position in history and the first from the European region.

According to the press service of the organisation, 167 countries voted for Berbock

The German diplomat will take up her new duties in September, when the new session of the General Assembly opens.

“Today we are living in difficult times. We are walking on a tightrope of uncertainty. Only we have been through difficult times before. And it is up to us to take on these challenges,” Berbock said in her inauguration speech, quoted by the DPA news agency.

Berbock was Germany’s foreign minister in Olaf Scholz’s government from December 2021 to May 2025.
