German Foreign Minister: Trump’s comments about Zelenskyy are linked to the US election campaign

Tensions have flared up once again in the world of international politics. The focus is on US President Donald Trump’s remarks about his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The tension is mounting, as the US mid-term congressional elections are approaching, and, as German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful asserts, every word counts.

At a press conference in Berlin, Wadeful urged people to view Trump’s criticism as pre-election rhetoric, whilst reiterating that support for Ukraine remains a priority for both the US and Germany. He also emphasised that it is Russia, not Ukraine, that is holding up the negotiation process, and warned against making concessions to the aggressor, alluding to the danger of messages that could be misinterpreted.

Speaking on Newsmax, Trump launched a scathing attack on Zelenskyy over the strikes on Russian oil refineries. According to him, Zelenskyy has proved to be a more difficult partner than Vladimir Putin. The US leader expressed hope that “eventually they will reach some sort of settlement”, although he acknowledged the difficulties in negotiations with the Ukrainian president. He also noted that Ukraine needs to hold elections.

Zelensky, for his part, commented on these remarks, assuring that he finds it easier to communicate with Trump than with Putin. As for the elections, Zelenskyy emphasised the importance of holding them exclusively in a secure environment, which seems impossible without a 60-day ceasefire on Russia’s part. However, the Kremlin has refused to agree to a long-term ceasefire, although it is prepared to refrain from attacks on polling day.

The situation is becoming increasingly tense, and only time will tell how it will be resolved. There are many unknowns ahead, but one thing is clear: the world stage remains a place of intense struggle and complex negotiations.
