Pope Leo XIV appealed to Putin to call a ceasefire in Aleshki; the Kremlin responded

Pope Leo XIV, known for his active stance on issues of peace and humanitarian aid, held a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on 16 October. The discussion centred on the critical situation in the town of Aleshki, located in the Kherson region, which is currently under Russian control.

During the conversation, the Pontiff expressed serious concern about the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the town. According to reports from the Vatican, there is an acute shortage of food and medicines in Oleshky, which is threatening the lives of local residents. Leo XIV called for an immediate ceasefire, which would allow for the delivery of humanitarian aid and the evacuation of civilians to safe areas.

The Pope also reaffirmed the Holy See’s unwavering commitment to supporting dialogue and the peaceful resolution of conflicts. He emphasised the importance of seeking peaceful solutions and the role of international cooperation in achieving stability in the region.

This move by the head of the Catholic Church once again reaffirms its commitment to preserving human life and upholding justice in conflict zones. The Pope is known for his calls for peace and his active diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving conflicts through negotiation and mutual understanding. The international community is now closely monitoring Moscow’s response to this appeal.
