Germany’s national debt stood at EUR2 trillion 726.5 billion at the end of March 2026, according to preliminary figures from the country’s Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).
This is EUR64.9 billion (2.4 per cent) higher than at the end of 2025.
In particular, federal debt rose by EUR44.4 billion (2.4 per cent) to reach EUR1 trillion 884.9 billion. The debt of German cities and municipalities increased by EUR3 billion (1.5%) to EUR199.3 billion. At the same time, the debt of the federal states rose by EUR17.6 billion (2.8 per cent) to EUR642.2 billion.
