Greece has not confirmed the transfer of Patriot missiles to Ukraine due to its own defence requirements

In recent days, the issue of support for Ukraine has once again drawn the attention of the international community, and Greece has found itself at the centre of this debate. The country’s Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has made an important statement, emphasising that Athens is prepared to continue supporting Kyiv, but does not intend to compromise its own security.

The question of transferring Patriot interceptor missiles, which are in service with the Greek armed forces, to Ukraine has become a real point of intrigue. During a meeting with a Radio Free Europe correspondent in Brussels, Mitsotakis avoided giving a direct answer, merely confirming the country’s readiness to support Ukraine within reasonable limits. He emphasised that Greece had already provided Kyiv with air defence systems, but that a balance must be struck so as not to undermine the country’s own defence capabilities, given the complex geopolitical situation in the region.

Reports of a possible transfer of Patriot missiles emerged following reports in the Greek newspaper Kathimerini that Kyiv had approached Athens with a request to transfer up to 200 PAC-2 missiles. These missiles, it is claimed, were due to be decommissioned shortly after 23 years of service with the Greek Air Force. The request reflects Ukraine’s desire to strengthen its defences amid the ongoing conflict.

For its part, Bloomberg had previously reported that NATO and EU allies were putting pressure on Greece and Spain to transfer these missiles to Ukraine. European officials have confirmed, albeit unofficially, that efforts are under way to persuade countries to share weapons with Ukraine.

The current situation highlights the difficulty of balancing international support with national interests in the face of current global challenges. Greece, like many other countries, is trying to find an optimal solution that will allow it to remain an active participant on the international stage without jeopardising its own security.
