Hungary’s National Electoral Bureau has released the final results of the parliamentary elections, which witnessed the victory of the opposition force. The Tisza party won a constitutional majority with more than two-thirds of the popular vote.
After all ballots were counted, the political force led by Peter Magyar had 70.85 per cent of the vote. This allows it to form a dominant faction-141 mandates in the 199-seat parliament.
Meanwhile, the ruling alliance of the Fidesz and Christian Democratic People’s Party parties, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orban, received 26.13 per cent of support, corresponding to 52 parliamentary seats. The far-right Our Homeland party managed to overcome the electoral barrier and carried six representatives into parliament.
Commenting on the election results, Magyar emphasised that “the mandate obtained is unprecedented and at the same time imposes a significant responsibility on his political force”.
The election also saw a record turnout of nearly 80 per cent, which was “the highest turnout in the history of parliamentary races in the country”.
According to the results of the elections held on 12 April, the centre-right Tisza party wins a constitutional majority in Hungary’s new parliament.
Earlier, Kremlin speaker Dmitry Peskov said that Moscow respects the choice of the Hungarian people. At the same time, Peskov said that President Vladimir Putin would not congratulate Magyar on his victory because Hungary is an unfriendly country.
Magyar was congratulated by leaders of many EU countries and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Both Brussels and Kiev hope that Magyar, who calls himself a pro-European politician, will reconsider Orban’s policy and under his rule Hungary will stop blocking measures in favour of Ukraine.
