India has become the largest supplier of smartphones to the US, overtaking China

Shipments of smartphones from India to the US jumped 3.4 times in the second quarter, and the country’s share in total shipments of devices to the States reached 44% against 13% a year earlier, according to a report by analyst company Canalys (part of the Omdia Group).

Meanwhile, Chinese smartphones’ share of the US market fell to 25 per cent from 61 per cent in the second quarter of last year.

Vietnam gained share in the US smartphone market to 30 per cent from 24 per cent.

Total smartphone sales in the States rose 1% to 27.1 million in April-June, according to Canalys.

Apple Inc. declined 11 per cent to 13.3 million units, while Samsung increased shipments 38 per cent to 8.3 million. Motorola increased sales 2 per cent to 3.2 million units, Google rose 13 per cent to 800,000 and TCL declined 23 per cent to 700,000.

“India became the leading supplier of smartphones sold in the US for the first time in the second quarter, largely due to Apple’s supply chain realignment amid uncertainty in US-China trade relations,” Canalys chief analyst Sanyam Chaurasia said. – “Apple has ramped up its manufacturing capacity in India over the past few years before deciding to utilise most of its export capacity in the country to supply the US market in 2025.
