Iran and US agree on third round of talks on nuclear programme

Iranian and US negotiators have agreed to hold a third round of talks on Iran’s nuclear ambitions, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said.

He said the two sides agreed to meet again on 26 April in Oman, where the first round was held.

“I believe that technical talks at the expert level will start in Oman on Wednesday (23 April – ed.) and next Saturday we will meet in Oman and review the experts’ results to see how close it is to the principles of the agreement,” Araqchi said in comments to Iranian state television.

He described the meeting as “good” and expressed the view that the talks were progressing:

“This time we managed to better understand a number of principles and objectives.”

The United States delegation, led by US Presidential Special Representative Steve Witkoff, has not yet commented on the results of the Rome talks.

The 19 April meetings in Rome were the second round of high-level talks between delegations from Washington and Tehran this month.

US President Donald Trump has said he wants to ensure Iran never gets a nuclear weapon. Iran insists its nuclear programme is peaceful and wants an agreement that would lead to the lifting of sanctions that are hurting its economy.

Trump has said that in the absence of an agreement, military strikes would be launched against Iranian nuclear facilities, potentially involving Israel. Tehran has rejected the threats, calling them” an affront to “peace and security.

It is estimated that Iran can enrich enough uranium for one bomb in less than a week and enough for several bombs within a month.
