Iran executes another protester detained during January demonstrations

Iran has executed a protester detained during anti-government demonstrations in January, judicial media outlet Mizan and Washington-based human rights organisation HRANA said.

Ali Fahim was executed on 6 April after the Supreme Court upheld his conviction, Iranian authorities said.

Tehran’s Revolutionary Court convicted him on security-related charges, such as involvement in the arson attack on a base of the Basij paramilitary group – charges denied by human rights organisations.

With his execution, the number of defendants in the case executed in recent days has risen to four, raising concerns about the fate of others. Among them is Abolfazl Salehi Siawashani, another defendant in the case, who has reportedly been moved to solitary confinement, raising fears that he may face execution in the near future.

Human rights organisations have criticised Iran’s use of the death penalty, citing evidence of coerced confessions and unfair trials.
