Iran currently has “no plans” for inspections of its nuclear facilities by the International Atomic Energy Agency, the country’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Kazem Garibabadi, stated on 24 June.
According to him, Tehran will only discuss issues relating to the country’s nuclear facilities and enriched nuclear material as part of a final agreement with the United States.
“There are no plans to grant access to the attacked facilities or nuclear materials,” the diplomat said.
He also claims that IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi requested a meeting with Iranian officials in Switzerland, but his request was rejected.
“These discussions will be reviewed and determined exclusively within the framework of a final agreement,” Garibabadi wrote on his X page.
The Deputy Foreign Minister added that this would also depend on whether Washington demonstrated “practical steps” towards lifting sanctions against Tehran.
Garibabadi’s comments came after Grossi announced plans for UN agency inspectors to visit Iranian nuclear enrichment facilities damaged during last year’s Israeli-Iranian war. US President Donald Trump also stated that the agency would visit Iran “at the appropriate time”.
Since the start of the 12-day war between Israel and Iran last year, Tehran has blocked the UN agency’s access to its nuclear enrichment facilities.
IAEA inspections are vital for the implementation of the agreement signed by Washington and Tehran on 15 June, which requires Iran to reduce the enrichment level of its uranium stockpiles.
