Iran’s chief negotiator says there will be no agreement with the US without “tangible results”

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf has said Tehran will not accept any agreement with the United States unless it guarantees the rights of the Iranian people, state media reported.

Speaking after being sworn in for another term as speaker on 31 May, Qalibaf-former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Iran’s chief negotiator in talks with the United States-said there was “no trust” in U.S. promises, adding that Tehran would only honour its commitments after achieving “tangible results” and would evaluate any agreement based on concrete results.

In an undisclosed parliamentary session on 31 May, Qalibaf said Iran was “rejecting the enemy in a historic war”.

But he also warned that we should not fall into the trap of a war of attrition, adding that by putting national interests and public demands above factional and regional considerations, we should devise an effective way to solve the country’s problems.

The remarks appeared to be directed at the radical minority in parliament that strongly opposes continuing talks with the United States to end the war.

US President Donald Trump has said Washington is moving closer to a “very good deal” with Iran, but warned that military action remains an option if talks fail.
