Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on 15 May that Tehran had received reports from the United States indicating that Washington was eager to continue talks aimed at ending the war in the Middle East.
The U.S. has not confirmed Araqchi’s claims.
Speaking in New Delhi at a BRICS summit press conference, Araqchi said: “We have again received a message from the Americans that they are ready to continue talks and co-operation.”
The other day, US President Donald Trump called Iran’s latest peace proposal “totally unacceptable”.
Araqchi said Iran is ready for both a return to military conflict and diplomatic solutions. He added that the mediation process by Pakistan has not failed but faces difficulties.
The Iranian foreign minister did not provide any further details about the alleged US negotiating offer, nor his claim that the mediation process is facing difficulties.
Araqchi also said the issue of Iran’s uranium enrichment is “complicated and we have proposed to postpone this discussion in order to reach a result with the U.S. side.”
As part of any potential peace agreement, the Trump administration has insisted that Iran agree to a long-term suspension or complete cessation of uranium enrichment.
