Iran’s supreme leader did not participate in Eid al-Fitr prayers in Tehran

In Tehran, Eid al-Fitr prayers were held in the absence of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.

On the morning of 21 March, Eid al-Fitr prayers were held in various cities across Iran, including Tehran, Qom and Mashhad.

Eid al-Fitr prayers in the Iranian capital were held at the Grand Mosque of Tehran under the leadership of Mohammad Javad Hajj Ali Akbari, the interim imam of Tehran’s Friday prayers.

Given the uncertain status of Khamenei, recently declared the third supreme leader of the Islamic Republic and succeeding his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, this year’s Eid al-Fitr prayers attracted much attention.

A funeral prayer and burial ceremony was also held on 21 March for Ali Mohammad Naini, a former spokesman for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps who was killed in an Israeli strike.

A public funeral for Ali Khamenei has yet to take place, despite the fact that three weeks have passed since his death in a US-Israeli airstrike on 28 February.
