Israel’s prime minister says he wants to withdraw US financial support

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that he wants to withdraw American financial support. He said this in an interview with CBS News, when asked if he thought it was time for Israel to review and possibly reset its financial relationship with the United States.

“Absolutely. And I’ve said that to President Trump. I said it … To our people. Their jaws dropped,” he said. – I want to zero in on American financial support, the financial component of our military co-operation. Because we get – we get from $3.8 billion a year. I think it’s time for us to withdraw military support.”

Netanyahu proposes to begin reducing U.S. financial support “now” and completely withdraw it over the next ten years.

According to Bloomberg, the U.S. provides Israel with $3.8 billion a year in military aid under a 10-year agreement that runs through 2028.

The Congressional Research Service report said Israel is the largest recipient of U.S. aid since the end of World War II. To date, the U.S. has provided Israel with $174 billion (not adjusted for inflation) to strengthen its economy and military.
