Israeli military says it has launched a ground operation in Gaza

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) have launched a ground operation in several areas of the Gaza Strip, the military said in a statement.

According to the IDF, over the past 24 hours, Israel Defence Forces have launched a “broad ground operation” across the north and south of the Gaza Strip as part of the launch of Operation Gideon’s Chariot.

The IDF says the air force attacked more than 670 Hamas (recognised as a terrorist group in the EU and the US) targets across the Gaza Strip over the past week to “disrupt enemy preparations and assist the ground operation”.

Earlier, on the evening of 5 May, the Israeli army reported an airstrike on the Yemeni port of Hodeidah and a cement factory in al-Hodeidah province. The targets are located in Houthi-controlled territory.

Israel called the attack a response to a rocket attack on Ben Gurion airport on 4 May that wounded several people.

The Israeli army said it was striking “terrorist infrastructure.”

The Houthis said at least four people were killed in the strikes.

The Iranian-backed Yemeni group has repeatedly fired rockets towards Israel, claiming to be seeking an end to the Israeli operation in the Gaza Strip. Israel, for its part, has struck Yemen several times, including at the airport in Sanaa last December.
