A car travelling at high speed hit pedestrians in the northern Italian city of Modena, injuring eight people, police and city officials said.
“It seems the driver deliberately drove onto the pavement, hitting several people and crashing into a shop window. He then got out of the car and pulled out a knife,” Mayor Massimo Mezzetti said.
According to him, the driver was detained by passers-by and handed over to the police.
The detainee is an Italian citizen, born in Bergamo, of North African origin, a resident of the Modena neighbourhood, he is about 30 years old. His motives are not yet known.
According to the mayor, the four injured are in serious condition.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Maloney called what happened in Modena “extremely serious”.
