Kim Jong Un pledges ‘unconditional support’ for Russia at meeting with Shoigu

Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang. Kim told Shoigu that his country would “unconditionally support” Russia, North Korean state media reported on 5 June.

“Kim Jong-un confirmed that the DPRK government will continue to unconditionally support Russia’s position and foreign policy in the future,” the report said.

North Korea will “responsibly observe” the articles of the treaty between the two countries, the agency quoted Kim as saying.

The Russian Security Council said that during the meeting there was a “thorough dialogue on a wide range of issues on the international agenda, including the situation around Ukraine, and the prospects for the development of bilateral relations between Russia and the DPRK in the spirit of the signed Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty.”

Shoigu and Kim also reportedly discussed steps to honour the fallen Korean servicemen who took part in battles in Russia’s Kursk region against Ukrainian forces.

Pyongyang and Moscow, which ratified the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty in November 2024, have denied arms shipments but recently confirmed the participation of North Korean troops in combat operations against Ukrainian forces in Russia’s Kursk region.
