Latvian parliament finalises approval of draft law on travel ban to Russia and Belarus

The Latvian Saeima Committee on Defence, Internal Affairs and Prevention of Corruption has supported the draft law “on restricting activities threatening national security”. The document provides for a travel ban on certain civil servants travelling to Russia and Belarus.

The travel ban to Russia and Belarus applies to the following persons:

  • those who have been granted special authorisation for access to state secrets;
  • those responsible for the security of critical infrastructure facilities;
  • those working in the Ministries of Defence, Interior and Justice and institutions subordinate to the respective ministries;
  • those who work at military facilities, the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau, the tax and customs police, and customs officials of the State Tax Service.

The ban will apply to members of the Sejm, as well as those working in the diplomatic or consular service, the judiciary or prosecutors’ offices.

The bill should be supported by the Seimas in the final reading.
