Latvian ports reduced cargo transshipment by 14%

Latvian ports handled 7.782 million tonnes of cargo in January-March 2026, which is 14.2% less than in the same period last year, according to data from the Latvian Ministry of Transport.

Bulk cargoes were handled the most during the quarter – 3.462 million tonnes (down 11.8%). Of these, 1.171 million tonnes of grain and grain products were handled (-12.3%), wood chips – 751.9 thousand tonnes (-10.5%), chemical bulk cargo – 95.4 thousand tonnes (-16.5%), and coal – 10 thousand tonnes (25-fold drop).

The volume of general cargo transshipment in January-March was 2.826 million tonnes (-15%). Container cargo was handled 1.136 million tonnes (-9.6%), timber – 817.2 thousand tonnes (-33.2%), ro-ro cargo – 797.2 thousand tonnes (+0.1%).

In the first quarter of this year Latvian ports handled 1.494 million tonnes of liquid bulk cargo (-17.7%). The bulk of liquid bulk cargo handled was oil products – 1.275 million tonnes (-22.5%).

The Port of Riga remains the leader in terms of transshipment volumes – in the first quarter it handled 3.994 million tonnes of cargo (-8.2%). It is followed by the Port of Ventspils – 1.778 million tonnes (-25.2%) and the Port of Liepaja – 1.519 million tonnes (-5.3%).

Small ports handled 490.7 thousand tonnes of cargo in the first three months of 2026 (-32.9%).

Last year, Latvian ports handled 34.281 million tonnes of cargo, which is 4.8% less than in 2024.
