Media: Germany has agreed to change payments to Ukrainian refugees

The German government coalition has agreed on the reform of social payments for Ukrainians, the German daily Bild quoted government sources as saying on 12 November.

According to the media, German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt and Labour Minister Berbel Bas reached an agreement that Ukrainians who arrived in Germany after 1 April 2025 will move to the system of payments under the law on benefits for asylum seekers.

There are now 1.1 million Ukrainians living in Germany. They receive 563 euros a month in basic assistance (for single people). The state also covers the costs of rent, heating, etc. Instead, the Law on Assistance to Asylum Seekers provides 196 euros for personal needs and 245 euros for basic expenses (food, clothing) – a total of 441 euros per month.

The reason for the change was the low employment of Ukrainians in Germany. It is expected that the reduction of benefits will encourage more refugees to look for work.

In September, more than 79 thousand Ukrainians became refugees in the EU countries. According to Eurostat, this is 49% more than a month earlier.

The number of applications for temporary protection increased in 24 countries, according to Eurostat. Among the leaders: Poland – 12,960 (+1.3%), Germany – 7,585 (+0.6%), Czech Republic-3,455 (+0.9%). The only decrease in military migrants was recorded in France – -240 people (-0.4%).
